GENTLE NIGHT WEANING GUIDE

Everything you need to know about how to transition your little one away from feeding at night in a gentle and respectful way

40+ pages of evidence-based information and guidance to help you make informed choices and decisions on when and how to night wean your little one from breast, chest or bottle feeding.

The transition away from feeding your little one at night can seem quite daunting.

Especially if feeding to sleep is currently working well, or is the only thing that works to get your little one back to sleep!

Whether you’re just in the early stages of thinking about night weaning, or you’re actively considering night weaning…

If you’re anything like a lot of the parents I help, you’re probably feeling a bit (or very!) apprehensive

You may be asking yourself things like:

  • Should I be doing it soon, or should I wait a while longer?
  • How on earth is my LO going to manage without the ‘boob’/bottle?
  • Will night weaning also reduce night wakefulness?
  • How can I night wean gently, with the least amount of stress and resistance?

You’re worried the process isn’t going to be easy…

When you’ve heard other parents talking about their experiences with night weaning, they seem to fall into one of two camps:

Those who night-weaned with ease

They just stopped feeding overnight and their little one wasn’t too fussed. Or their LO just ‘self-weaned’ or started ‘sleeping through the night’ so they didn’t have to actively do anything.

And those who really struggled

They had to deal with a lot of distress, over many sleepless nights. They may have even had a few attempts before it finally worked. And even after night weaning, their LO still wakes.

You’d love to join the first camp.

But you’re a bit worried you may end up in the latter.

You’re hoping to avoid a stressful experience …but how?

The main reason parents struggle with night weaning is that they’re not well-informed

They attempt night weaning without a good understanding of it. And as a result they…

  • Make decisions based on outdated or opinion-based advice, rather than on the latest evidence-based information.
  • Rush in before their little one is ready for, or receptive to, the process.
  • Don’t take the time to weigh everything up before making decisions.
  • Don’t plan or prepare their little one for the transition.

But the good news is, you don’t have to…

Because with the right information and tools, it is possible to approach night weaning in a gentle and respectful way.

And – especially if you have the ability to wait until your little one is ready – it’s also possible for night weaning to be easy, with little-to-no stress or resistance.

Night weaning doesn’t have to be stressful! You CAN…

Get across the evidence

and make decisions confidently, without spending late nights and early hours of the morning Googling.

Feel comfortable

with your choices when it comes to night weaning.

Put together a night-weaning plan

tailored specifically for you and your little one’s unique needs.

I found the guide so helpful! It helped me weigh up the options rather than being convinced into a particular direction. I would highly recommend reading it – my worries, concerns and questions were all answered in this one guide.

This is the only comprehensive respectful/gentle night weaning guide I’ve found. It helps to debunk ideas that feeding at night is “bad” and provides flexible and varied advice for planning for and beginning night weaning. Empowering!

IMPORTANT: This guide may NOT be for you if…

You’re hoping to wean quickly AND without much resistance

Gentle night weaning – where there’s minimal stress or resistance – generally involves waiting until a little one is ready / more receptive to the transition.

It’s important to be aware that while it’s possible to wean quickly, you will most likely find you have to manage at least some (and maybe a lot of) resistance.

If you need to night wean quickly, then this guide can help you find the path of least resistance, and manage any resistance in a respectful way. But the level of resistance you experience will come down to your little one’s age and their individual temperament and preferences. Every little one is different – some can make the transition relatively easily at a young age, while others will be very resistant and struggle to settle in any other way for much longer.

For this reason, this guide doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to wean your little one quickly AND without any resistance.

Unfortunately a ‘magic bullet’ solution for that doesn’t exist.

This guide is gentle, informative, and backed by science. It’s made me more comfortable staying where we are at in our breastfeeding journey despite inaccurate advice otherwise, and feel more confident in the night weaning transition when it is truly time for us. Highly recommended!

This guide is evidence-based (Georgina’s style!) and full of tips and advice about night weaning in a way that’s as respectful as possible to little ones. It contains info on when to start, when it may or may not be necessary, potential impacts on sleep etc. I would really recommend this guide along with The Baby Sleep Revolution program – all of Georgina’s content is super helpful and unique.

A refreshing and reassuring guide around normalising feeding at night. It makes you stop and think about why you want to night wean – and provides potential other ways to help reduce wakefulness/avoid having to night wean altogether. It also makes it clear it’s a process and it’s ok if your LO isn’t ready yet!

Lorna

Hey, I’m Georgina

And I’m here for pretty similar reasons to you… only I’m at the other end of the tunnel (where the light is!) now.

I know what it’s like to dread the nights and struggle through the days in a foggy haze…

When my little one was 9 months old, he started waking every sleep cycle at night. The sleep deprivation was so severe, I could barely function. It wasn’t long before I hit breaking point.

But I was actually really lucky. Because unlike most parents, I knew what was going on, and I knew a way out. Being a bit of a science nut, I’d already done a lot of reading and research on sleep and had discovered an evidence-backed way of helping wakeful little ones sleep better.

So when my baby started waking frequently, I decided to apply what I’d learned to see if it really worked. And after just a few weeks, he went back to waking for just two quick feeds a night. The fog lifted and I felt human again.

“Babies bring so much joy into our lives as parents – I don’t believe anyone should have to deal with the stress and exhaustion that wakefulness can cause for any longer than they already have.”

And that’s why I do what I do – help parents struggling with wakefulness.

If that’s you right now, I’d love to help you get to a much better place and enjoy parenthood a whole lot more too!

Got a question about the guide? Find the answer here!

Night weaning is often considered in the hope that it might reduce wakefulness, especially when parents feel like they’ve already tried everything else!

But there is no evidence (research) to support this. Anecdotally, some parents report it does help, while others find it made no difference. It comes down to the reason/s for the wakefulness, and also the individual child’s preferences and temperament.

So there’s no guarantee that night weaning will help with night wakefulness. For this reason, night weaning for the sole purpose of reducing wakefulness is not advised.

In saying that, this guide can help to understand more about night weaning and decide whether or not night weaning the best next step for you (and if not, what is).

If frequent waking (or being constantly latched if breast/chest feeding) overnight is your main challenge, then working out what’s causing the wakefulness and addressing the cause is probably the best next step to take.

My 5-Day Baby Sleep Mini-Course can help you with this. Or – if you’re really keen to improve the nights quickly – my Baby Sleep Revolution program is also worth considering (watch the video on the program page for more details on the program and whether it’s likely to help you).

Many parents find that once the wakefulness improves and their LO is waking just a few times for a quick feed, they’re happy to continue feeding at night for a while longer. But even if you do want to night wean, you’ll find it a much easier process when you’re only dealing with a few quick wakes.

The aim of this guide is to help you transition your little one away from feeding at night respectfully and with minimal resistance.

It’s important to remember that every baby and toddler is an individual. When it comes to settling, some have a stronger need / preference for feeding to sleep than others. And some may have that preference for quite some time (well into their second year or beyond). This is not something that can be changed, it’s just how they’re wired.

This guide provides you with strategies to help prepare and transition your little one away from feeding at night respectfully, but it’s important to be aware that if you want to night wean with minimal resistance, you also need to be prepared to wait until your little one is ready to make that transition easily.

If you choose to / need to night wean before this time, you may find your little one is resistant and may become upset when you try to settle them in a different way. But unfortunately, there’s no magic bullet solution for weaning quickly AND without any resistance.

The guide should give you a really solid understanding of the evidence on night weaning and help you prepare you to be able to make decisions around when and how you may approach it in the future.

It’s important to be aware that parent-led night weaning is – in an ideal world – is not recommended until at least the second year of life (18+ months). This is for a couple of good reasons – ensuring access to nutrition during the most rapid period of growth and development (the first 1000 days from conception) and also to minimise stress and resistance.

For parents of younger babies, this guide is designed to be more of a preparation tool to help with general understanding and future decision making, rather than a process to be applied immediately.

Because it’s downloadable, you can not only use it to prepare for the future, you’ll also be able to refer to it down the track when you’re ready to start the night weaning process.

Once you download it, it’s yours to keep!

You will be emailed login details and a link to the site where the guide can be downloaded from. You must download the guide within 7 days of purchase. Make sure you save it somewhere safe so you can access it again in the future as needed because once your access expires, you won’t be able to download it again.

No there isn’t.

When you purchase the guide, you’re purchasing information and general guidance. You are responsible for deciding if and how you implement any of the information or strategies provided, and for any outcomes/results. Individual experiences and outcomes vary and are usually due to factors outside my control (e.g. a participants willingness or ability to apply the strategies, a little one’s readiness for night-weaning, health-related factors, etc.).

Please ensure you are 100% comfortable with your decision and that you read the Gentle Night Weaning Guide Terms & Conditions which includes the refund policy (available at check out) before purchasing.

No. The guide provides written general information and guidance only, though it does include suggestions on how to find practitioners, coaches and organisations who you can approach if you need 1:1 support in the lead up to or during the night weaning process.

I acknowledge the Turrbal, Yuggera and Waka Waka people as the ongoing custodians of the lands where Georgina May Sleep is based, to the north west of Meanjin (Brisbane). I recognise their continuing connection to the lands and waters, and acknowledge that they never ceded sovereignty. Always was, always will be. I thank them for protecting the beautiful towering eucalypts, the native grasses, the families of birds, the reptiles, the insects, and the delightful wallabies and koalas (who inspire me every day with their responsive parenting practices!) over many thousands of generations. I am so incredibly grateful to be able to help parents around the world and do my bit to change the way society approaches sleep for the better from such a special – and magical – place. I pay my respects to Elders past and present, and extend my respects to all First Nations people visiting this website.

Results vary and depend on many factors including but not limited to a parent/caregivers ability to implement any tips or guidance effectively and consistently, the cause/s of any wakefulness and whether or not a little one’s wakefulness is excessive or their natural ‘normal’.
